Elon Musk is re-engaging in U.S. politics with plans to increase Republican voter turnout ahead of the 2026 midterm elections. The billionaire entrepreneur is reinstating his political action committee, America PAC, which played a significant role in supporting Donald Trump and other Republican candidates during the 2024 election cycle, spending more than $260 million.
The Republican Party faces significant challenges in retaining control of the House of Representatives in the upcoming November elections, with Trump’s low approval ratings complicating their prospects. Meanwhile, some Democrats see potential to regain control of the Senate. America PAC intends to focus on grassroots efforts such as door-to-door canvassing and targeted advertising aimed at conservative voters, especially those less likely to participate in midterm elections.
James Blair, a senior political adviser to Trump, described the PAC’s return as a crucial asset for the Republican campaign, emphasizing confidence in their ability to mobilize GOP voters. “America PAC was an essential partner for our historic [get out the vote] operation in 2024, and their return for 2026 is a huge boost for Republicans across the country,” Blair said. “We will again outsmart our opponents and ruthlessly execute our mission for the GOP between now and election day.”
Musk’s renewed involvement is expected to expand the Republican Party’s substantial financial advantage over Democrats heading into the midterms. As the world’s richest individual, Musk made history in 2024 by becoming the largest political donor after channeling substantial funds to Trump’s campaign. He briefly served in 2025 as head of the cost-cutting agency Doge within the Trump administration but resigned after four months amid deteriorating relations with the former president. Musk also considered establishing a new political entity called the “America Party” but has since reconciled with the Republican establishment and publicly appeared alongside Trump.
Republican-affiliated campaign groups currently report nearly $1 billion available for spending ahead of November’s elections, compared to about $404 million held by their Democratic counterparts. However, Musk experienced a notable setback in April 2025 when his $21 million investment in conservative candidate Brad Schimel for the Wisconsin Supreme Court was decisively defeated by a liberal opponent. Analysts suggested Musk’s high-profile campaign, which included Musk donning a Wisconsin “cheese head” hat at a rally, may have unintentionally galvanized Democratic voters.
An America PAC spokesperson, Andrew Romeo, expressed optimism about the GOP’s organizational strength leading into the midterms. “The president’s political team and the rest of the GOP apparatus have built a top-notch operation that will put Republicans in a strong position to buck history and retain control of Congress this fall,” Romeo said.
Musk also generated controversy in 2024 with a voter sweepstakes that awarded a $1 million prize to individuals who signed a voter registration petition. Although Musk asserted the winners were chosen at random, it was later revealed by his legal team that the two initial winners were registered Republicans with a longstanding history of voting for GOP candidates. This disclosure raised questions about the selection process and its impartiality.
