The Abu Dhabi Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT) has announced a comprehensive upgrade to the road network in Mussafah, a key industrial and commercial district in Abu Dhabi. The project aims to improve connectivity, enhance traffic flow, and boost safety for commuters and businesses throughout the area.
The planned works will cover approximately 13 kilometers along E30 and 8th Street, with a major focus on constructing a new free-flow highway along 8th Street. This highway will feature three lanes in each direction, complemented by three additional service lanes on each side. The service lanes are designed to maintain local access to shops and amenities while preventing disruption to through traffic.
In addition to the highway, the project includes enhancements to four interchanges along E30, modifications to nine critical junctions, and improved road links between 8th Street and E20. The infrastructure improvements will also add two new bridges connecting Mussafah with the neighboring Mohamed Bin Zayed City, facilitating easier access for residents and workers. A dedicated pedestrian bridge will be constructed to increase safety for foot traffic in an area previously noted for difficult crossings.
Mussafah plays a vital role in supporting Abu Dhabi’s logistics, industrial activities, and commercial operations. The DMT emphasizes that efficient and well-planned road infrastructure is essential for sustaining the area’s growth and attractiveness for investment.
Eng. Eisa Mubarak Al Mazrouei, Director General of Infrastructure Development at DMT, highlighted the multifaceted nature of Mussafah’s transport needs. He noted the importance of separating local and through traffic, stating that this approach will not only make daily journeys smoother and safer but also foster economic activity and prepare the region’s transport network for future expansion.
This upgrade is part of a broader initiative to develop Mussafah into a smarter, more integrated industrial hub aligned with Abu Dhabi’s long-term strategic goals. Further plans include a proposed undersea tunnel connection between Abu Dhabi Island’s eastern tip and Mussafah, traversing beneath Khor Al Maqta and the Al Hudayriyat Island channel. Once completed, these enhancements are expected to solidify Mussafah’s position as a critical node in Abu Dhabi’s transport infrastructure.
