A recent family visit to Abu Dhabi showcased the city’s growing appeal as a cultural and recreational destination for residents of all ages. Mark Thompson, Editor-in-Chief, recounted a three-day itinerary that engaged his children with a diverse array of experiences spanning art, history, and immersive entertainment.
Thompson’s visit began with a stop at the Louvre Abu Dhabi, where both the art collection and the museum’s architecture left a strong impression. He noted the building’s design, which integrates natural light and sea views, creating an environment described as “like walking through a daydream.” The museum’s extensive exhibits offered a broad perspective on global art and heritage.
Next on the family’s itinerary was the Zayed National Museum, which provided a historical overview of the United Arab Emirates’ formation and explored the legacy of the country’s founding father, Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan. Thompson highlighted how the museum’s storytelling approach made complex historical narratives accessible and engaging for his children, helping them connect with local culture and history.
The visit continued with the Natural History Museum, which proved especially popular with Thompson’s younger son. The museum’s collection of dinosaur fossils and interactive displays, including a Lego exhibition, captured the imagination of the children and offered educational insights into human history and natural science.
In addition to cultural institutions, the family experienced Abu Dhabi’s modern entertainment offerings. On Yas Island, they visited SeaWorld Abu Dhabi, an extensive indoor marine theme park, and Warner Bros. World, which features rides, themed attractions, and dining options. These venues provided a lively contrast to the more contemplative museum visits, rounding out the visit with recreational activities.
Thompson reflected on the range of experiences available within a compact area, noting that his children moved seamlessly from learning about ancient history and cultural heritage to engaging with contemporary amusement parks. Both sons expressed enthusiasm about returning to explore more of Abu Dhabi in the future.
The family’s trip underscores Abu Dhabi’s development as a multifaceted destination that combines education, culture, and entertainment. The diverse offerings contribute to a deeper understanding of the UAE’s heritage while providing enjoyable experiences for visitors of all generations.
