Karen Teasdale has shared a harrowing account of lifelong abuse she endured at the hands of her mother, Isobel, who terrorized her childhood through physical violence and alleged poisoning attempts. The ordeal, spanning decades, culminated in a series of revelations about Isobel’s mental health and prompted wider scrutiny of her behavior in later years.
Teasdale, now 61, describes a childhood in Newcastle upon Tyne marked by extreme physical and psychological abuse. From the age of four, her mother subjected her to violent assaults and manipulations, while simultaneously presenting an outward image of a devoted mother and successful business owner. Despite her mother’s public facade, Teasdale recalls repeated instances where Isobel administered substances causing her to become ill, often under the guise of medical treatment. These incidents included being sprayed with unknown liquids and given powders that led to vomiting and severe distress.
Teasdale’s brother Brian emerged as a complex figure within the family dynamic, subjected to physical abuse but ultimately regarded by their mother as the favored child. Isobel’s behavior fostered division between the siblings, leveraging a mixture of cruelty and favoritism to undermine their relationship. One particularly traumatic episode occurred when Teasdale was 13: punished for skipping school, she was forced to dig what her mother called “her own grave” under threat of further violence.
Efforts to seek help during childhood and early adulthood were unsuccessful, with the prevailing social services landscape at the time lacking the safeguarding frameworks now commonly in place. Even disclosures to trusted adults were met with disbelief, intensifying Teasdale’s isolation and trauma. She eventually left home at 18 but struggled with low self-esteem and unhealthy relationships before starting a family of her own.
As an adult, Teasdale faced continued interference and manipulation from her mother, who targeted her new partner Kenny with accusations and threats. A phone call from Brian warned that Isobel intended to poison Kenny, leading to a confrontation that revealed her holding tablets she tried to conceal. This incident underscored the persistence of Isobel’s abusive behavior well into her seventies.
In her later years, Isobel’s mental health came under professional review. Experts identified signs consistent with Munchausen syndrome by proxy, a condition where a caregiver fabricates or induces illness in someone under their care, often to gain attention or control. Brain scans also revealed extensive scarring to Isobel’s frontal lobe, an area associated with emotional regulation and empathy, leading clinicians to suggest psychopathic traits may have influenced her behavior.
The family’s painful history reached a critical point when Isobel’s husband, Teasdale’s father, suffered a severe brain injury under suspicious circumstances. Although Isobel and Brian were initially arrested, they were released due to lack of evidence, but social services increased their involvement. Isobel was eventually sectioned in 2013 and later diagnosed with dementia and ovarian cancer before her death at age 75.
Teasdale has publicly reflected on the complexity of her relationship with her mother, expressing both grief and relief at Isobel’s passing. She rejects the notion of forgiveness as necessary for healing, choosing instead to focus on rebuilding her life free from fear. Her memoir, “Poison Kisses,” offers an unflinching look at the devastating impacts of familial abuse and the long road toward recovery.
