Auckland dancer John “Happyfeet” Vaifale shared insights into his favorite local spots in a recent interview, highlighting a mix of familiar beaches, eateries, and venues that hold personal significance.
For relaxation, Vaifale favors Weymouth Beach, located near his home, where he grew up visiting to unwind. While he admits to not being a morning person and often missing brunch, when he does make time for it, Choice Food Bar in Manurewa is his preferred destination.
In a departure from expectations, Vaifale cites McDonald’s as his preferred restaurant for dinner with friends, emphasizing the memorable late-night moments shared there. When welcoming visitors, particularly international dance guests to Tāmaki, he recommends Piha Beach as a reliable and impressive destination, especially during the summer months.
After a night out, Vaifale prioritizes heading straight home to sleep but occasionally stops at Li’l Abners in Papatoetoe if he has the energy to continue. Although he is not a coffee drinker, he is on a quest to find Auckland’s best place for tea beyond his own home.
While not an avid hiker, Vaifale recalls enjoying a visit to the Waitākere Ranges with friends. For fish and chips, he praises Toby’s Seafood in Manurewa and Ōtāhuhu, describing it as the best in Auckland and even claiming it ranks among the best worldwide, especially recommending their kina, raw fish, and fry bread combination.
When it comes to live performances, Vaifale appreciates the intimate atmosphere of the Basement Theatre, noting the close connection to the stage and welcoming staff. For bargains and a vibrant community experience, he points to the Ōtara Flea Market, ideal for early risers.
Vaifale’s upcoming show “Off Axis” will be performed at Auckland’s Q Theatre on October 15 as part of the Tempo Dance Festival.
