Mary Elizabeth O’Brien, known affectionately as Liz, passed away suddenly on May 2, 2026, at the age of 73. Born on April 11, 1953, in Birmingham, she was remembered by family and friends as a warm and positive presence whose life was marked by love, resilience, and community involvement.

Liz was the elder half-sister in a large family, sharing a father with the author of a recent tribute. She met her husband, Kevin, at the Birmingham Small Arms Company (BSA), where he was an apprentice and she worked as a secretary. The couple married in 1974 and settled in Solihull, near Birmingham, where they built a life together and raised a son, Matthew. Their family expanded to include Matthew’s wife, Julie, and two granddaughters, Caitlyn and Ava.

Known for her vibrant spirit, Liz embraced new challenges throughout her life. In her 40s, she took up tap dancing and joined a local troupe, performing in various events. Following Kevin’s death in 2017, she coped with her grief by remaining active in the community, becoming a member of two choirs. These groups toured throughout the UK, including a performance at the opening ceremony of the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. One of the choirs also appeared on the television show Britain’s Got Talent, earning unanimous approval from the judges.

Liz was admired not only for her joyful participation in life but also for her gentle and nonjudgmental approach toward others. Her family described her as someone who consistently saw the positive side of situations and sought to guide people kindly rather than criticize. She lived modestly in the same home in Solihull for decades and was known for her love of charity shop finds and daily visits to a local Costa Coffee, where she was well-regarded by staff and fellow patrons alike.

Her unexpected passing brought an outpouring of grief from the community. Approximately 400 people attended her funeral, held at a local church and marked by an atmosphere of deep sorrow. In tribute, choir members performed an impromptu concert at her favorite coffee shop, leaving her usual seat empty in her memory.
