Myanmar authorities conducted large-scale destruction of seized narcotics and precursor chemicals on Friday to observe the 39th International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. The events took place simultaneously in Yangon, Mandalay, and Taunggyi, highlighting the government’s efforts to combat drug trafficking across the country.
Official data indicates that the total value of the narcotics and precursor substances destroyed nationwide amounted to approximately 603.77 million U.S. dollars. In Yangon, officials destroyed 31 different types of drugs valued at more than 321.32 million dollars. Mandalay saw the destruction of 27 types of narcotics with a combined value of 113.68 million dollars, while Taunggyi officials destroyed 93 types of drugs worth around 168.77 million dollars.
These coordinated efforts are part of Myanmar’s ongoing campaign to address drug-related issues and raise awareness of the dangers associated with illicit drug use and trafficking. The International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, observed annually, aims to strengthen action and cooperation to achieve a drug-free world.
The destruction ceremonies involved the controlled disposal of the seized substances, ensuring they could not reenter illegal markets. These actions underscore Myanmar’s commitment to regional and international efforts to curb drug production and trafficking, which have long posed challenges to public health and security in Southeast Asia.
