Myanmar authorities have detained 12 foreign nationals suspected of involvement in telecommunications fraud and related criminal activities near the Myawady area. The group comprises six Ethiopians, three Indians, two Chinese, and one Kenyan, all of whom reportedly entered the region illegally and are currently under investigation ahead of deportation proceedings.
From January 30, 2025, to May 30, 2026, local officials in Myawady Township have apprehended a total of 14,701 foreign nationals who entered the area without authorization. Of those, 13,521 individuals have been deported back to their home countries through Thailand, following established legal protocols. In addition, 662 people have faced prosecution on charges related to immigration violations and drug offenses. Another 518 detainees remain in custody, with authorities ensuring proper accommodation and management as they await deportation.
The Myanmar government has emphasized ongoing collaboration with neighbouring states, regional partners, and international organizations to dismantle online scam networks and related illicit activities. Efforts are also focused on the prompt identification and repatriation of trafficked or vulnerable foreign nationals to prevent further exploitation. This cooperative approach underscores Myanmar’s commitment to addressing cross-border crime and enhancing regional security.
