Professor Dr U Thein, founder and Honorary Patron of the Myanmar Geosciences Society (MGS), passed away on October 5 at the age of 90. The announcement was made by the MGS to inform students and colleagues of his death, which occurred at Shwegondine Specialist Hospital in Yangon.
Dr U Thein was a retired professor from the Department of Geology at Yangon University and played a pivotal role in advancing geological sciences in Myanmar. He was widely recognized as a leading expert in earthquake safety and research in the country. His expertise was sought extensively by the Myanmar Earthquake Committee (MEC), where he provided critical geological guidance and support.
Among his notable contributions, Dr U Thein authored and compiled the Seismic Zone Map of Myanmar, released in 2001, which remains a key resource for understanding seismic risks within the nation. His work has had a lasting impact on efforts to mitigate earthquake hazards in the region.
In addition to his research and advisory roles, Dr U Thein was a dedicated educator who devoted decades to teaching and mentoring young geologists at Yangon University and other academic institutions across Myanmar. His legacy includes the development of numerous professionals in the field who continue to influence geosciences domestically.
Dr U Thein’s extensive career and commitment to geological science established him as a respected figure within Myanmar’s scientific community.
