Myanmar’s President Min Aung Hlaing arrived in Beijing on June 15 for a three-day visit aimed at strengthening trade and strategic ties with China, according to state media reports. This marks the second state visit for Min Aung Hlaing since assuming the presidency in April, following an earlier trip to India.

Since the military coup in 2021 that removed the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi, Myanmar has experienced increased diplomatic isolation. The current visit signals Myanmar’s efforts to reinforce its relationship with a key regional partner.

During his visit, Min Aung Hlaing is scheduled to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Premier Li Qiang, and top legislator Zhao Leji, as confirmed by China’s Foreign Ministry. The delegation’s itinerary includes visits to high-technology industry sites and participation in an economic conference.

China’s Foreign Ministry has expressed its intention to use the visit to renew bilateral friendship and deepen what it terms “comprehensive strategic co-operation.” Ministry spokesman Lin Jian highlighted Beijing’s interest in expanding economic and political cooperation during a regular press briefing on June 16.

The visit coincides with heightened scrutiny of the bilateral relationship following China’s detention of a U.S. citizen working on Myanmar-related political analysis. Min Zin, founder of the Institute for Strategy and Policy Myanmar, was reportedly subjected to “criminal compulsory measures” on suspicion of espionage activities that threaten China’s national security, according to Lin Jian.

The detention underscores the sensitive nature of Myanmar-China relations amid ongoing political turmoil in Myanmar and increasing geopolitical competition in the region. Both countries appear to prioritize economic engagement and strategic partnership despite external pressures and Myanmar’s contested political landscape.

Min Aung Hlaing’s visit is expected to conclude on June 19, with potential announcements on further economic and political collaboration between the two countries.
