Wide receiver Malik Nabers has been listed as questionable for the New York Giants’ season opener against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday, despite practicing fully throughout the week. Nabers, who suffered a torn ACL and meniscus last September and underwent two surgeries, indicated that the decision to play ultimately rests with him, as he prioritizes the long-term health of his knee over immediate participation.

Nabers followed the Giants’ rehabilitation plan closely over the summer and appeared to progress well during training camp. Head coach John Harbaugh expressed confidence that the team would clear Nabers to play if he felt ready but emphasized that the player’s comfort with his recovery would dictate the final call. League sources had previously suggested Nabers was targeting an October return, but the team's decision not to place him on the Physically Unable to Perform list at the start of camp suggested an accelerated timeline.

Odell Beckham Jr., who has served as a mentor to Nabers, reflected on the psychological challenges of returning from a major injury. Beckham, who himself recovered from a torn ACL in 2017, acknowledged the internal fear and anxiety athletes often face when returning to play. “When you are ready and you feel it, that’s when you come back,” Beckham said, noting that players typically do not feel fully confident in their abilities until well into the season.

If Nabers does not take the field, the Giants’ wide receiver depth will face increased pressure following the recent release of Darius Slayton. Slayton’s departure, reportedly motivated by $32 million in salary-cap savings despite $9 million in guaranteed money, leaves the team with Beckham, Darnell Mooney, rookie Malachi Fields, and possibly a limited number of practice-squad elevations, including Braxton Berrios, to fill the receiver positions. This roster composition may necessitate more heavy personnel groupings.

In addition to Nabers, fullback Patrick Ricard was added to the injury report with a toe issue but participated fully in practice. Several other players — center Bryan Hudson, tight end Theo Johnson, defensive tackle Shelby Harris, and left tackle Andrew Thomas — have been listed on the injury report throughout the week but are expected to play after completing full practices.
