Oman is mourning the loss of Nadhira al Harthy, a pioneering mountaineer and public servant who died in an avalanche on Broad Peak in Pakistan. Al Harthy’s death has sparked widespread reflection on her trailblazing achievements and the impact of her life beyond the climbing community.

Nadhira al Harthy was the first Omani woman to reach the summit of Mount Everest in 2019 and subsequently became the first Arab woman to climb Ama Dablam. She also marked several national firsts, being the first Omani to summit K2, the world’s second-highest peak, and the first Omani woman to climb four mountains exceeding 8,000 meters, including the Matterhorn in 2023 and Nanga Parbat earlier this year.

Her journey into mountaineering began relatively late. Before becoming a climber, al Harthy pursued studies in social and geographic sciences and dedicated much of her career to education, working as a teacher, curriculum developer, and administrator. Her introduction to high-altitude trekking came in 2015 when she accompanied Omani students on an expedition to Mount Kilimanjaro. Although she did not complete the climb due to altitude sickness, the experience motivated her to pursue mountaineering seriously.

Inspired by Khalid al Siyabi, the first Omani man to summit Everest, al Harthy went on to break new ground for Omani women in the sport. Her ambition and perseverance transformed her into a symbol of resilience and courage, especially for young Omanis and women who saw in her a role model challenging traditional pathways and societal expectations.
