Ed Sheeran has been at the center of a controversy linked to his ongoing US tour, which intensified following the removal of his support act, rapper Macklemore, after the latter made statements supporting Palestine. The dispute emerged after Macklemore publicly expressed "Free Palestine" sentiments during a performance, incorporating graphic imagery related to the conflict in Gaza. Sheeran has stated that the decision to remove Macklemore was not his own, but the action led to several other backing acts withdrawing from the tour in solidarity.
On September 19, during a concert in Philadelphia—the first show he performed alone since the row began—Sheeran addressed the situation directly with his audience. He referred to the war in Gaza as “unjustifiable” and apologized for what he described as “mistakes” in handling the unfolding controversy. He acknowledged the difficulty of the decisions he had to make and reflected on the personal impact of the backlash, saying he “really didn’t know whether this tour would be carrying on.” He also expressed a sense of isolation as he felt abandoned by friends and family amid calls to cancel the tour, but noted that ticket sales remained strong, suggesting support from fans.
Following Sheeran’s emotional appearance, a social media backlash also developed. A video by therapist Megan Cooper gained attention, particularly after being reposted by Nadiya Hussain, a television cookery presenter and writer with a substantial online following. Without adding direct commentary, Hussain shared the video which criticized Sheeran’s onstage emotional reaction as an example of what Cooper described as “white tears.” Cooper characterized “white tears” as a cultural tactic whereby individuals, consciously or unconsciously, use displays of emotion to deflect accountability, gain sympathy, and center themselves in conflicts involving issues such as racism and oppression.
The video argued that in this context, Sheeran’s emotional response risked turning him into a victim figure, thereby overshadowing the broader and more serious humanitarian issues underpinning the conflict, particularly the suffering in Gaza. Cooper's commentary highlighted discrepancies in whose emotional responses are acknowledged or prioritized in public discourse.
Supporters of Sheeran have expressed sympathy for his position, emphasizing the challenges artists face in navigating complex political issues, especially when attempting to avoid overt political entanglement. Critics, however, view his responses as insufficient or misaligned with the gravity of the situation, particularly regarding the Palestinian cause.
