Adrian Naidoo, a figure with close ties to both community and sports events, maintained a series of mostly one-sided communications with Stuart Mitchell, a senior government official, over a period spanning more than a year. The exchanges, primarily initiated by Naidoo, included messages congratulating Mitchell and his family, invitations to football matches, and numerous photographs from various public events and charity games.

Between February of last year and February this year, Naidoo frequently contacted Mitchell, often sending updates and images from football events such as New Zealand’s Fifa World Cup qualifier match against New Caledonia and Wellington Phoenix games. Despite Naidoo’s repeated attempts to engage, including offers to provide tickets and even transportation to events, Mitchell’s responses were sparse and typically polite but noncommittal. On several occasions, Mitchell declined invitations due to commitments involving Cabinet committees or official duties with the Prime Minister, including recovery efforts in Nelson.

Naidoo also sent personal greetings, including a birthday message expressing appreciation for Mitchell’s public service. In one instance, he extended social invitations involving his partner, which Mitchell acknowledged but ultimately did not attend. Through much of the correspondence, Mitchell’s engagement was limited to brief acknowledgments, with many messages from Naidoo going unanswered.

In February this year, Naidoo disclosed to media that he had been approached by the Labour Party in early February about potentially standing as a candidate. He described the approach as “very much a hypothetical” at the time and stated that once he formed a definitive intention, he informed the police immediately. This period in February also marked the final known exchange of messages between Naidoo and Mitchell, ending with a series of photos from a Lantern Festival event.

Attempts to obtain direct comments from both Naidoo and Mitchell regarding these communications were made but yielded no response by the publication’s deadline. The exchange between the two figures has drawn attention due to the timing and nature of their interactions, set against the backdrop of Naidoo’s political considerations and his connections to community and sporting organizations. Further developments are expected as the story continues to unfold.
