A 36-year-old man was arrested at the scene of a stabbing in a Long Island City apartment building on August 1, authorities confirmed. Bretford Brewer of Brooklyn was taken into custody shortly before 1 p.m. after police responded to a report at the Hayden high-rise.

Officers discovered Brewer naked and spraying fire extinguishing foam on security cameras while attempting to forcibly enter an apartment. He was subsequently charged with murder and unlawful possession of a weapon in connection to the killing of Carlos Penzo, also 36, who was found with multiple stab wounds to his head, face, and chest. Penzo was located sitting up in a bathtub when police arrived.

Investigators recovered a knife and a Taser lying in Penzo’s lap at the scene. The exact nature of the relationship between the victim and Brewer remains unclear. However, law enforcement sources indicated the two may have arranged to meet through social media for a sexual encounter. The incident was reportedly preceded by a verbal altercation.

The homicide occurred within a residential building where two-bedroom apartments command rents exceeding $6,000 per month. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the stabbing.
