Jeremiah Nanai has reaffirmed his commitment to representing Samoa as he prepares to return to the Queensland Maroons lineup for the final game of the 2026 State of Origin series on Wednesday night at Suncorp Stadium. The 23-year-old forward, who was overlooked for the first two matches, earned a recall from Maroons coach Billy Slater after a standout performance for the North Queensland Cowboys in their upset victory over the Penrith Panthers last Saturday.

Nanai scored two tries in that match, showcasing why he is considered one of rugby league’s premier attacking forwards. His performance puts him in contention for future Australian national selection, though he has firmly stated he will continue representing Samoa at the international level. Having made his debut for Australia at the 2022 World Cup, Nanai switched allegiance to Samoa two years ago and has since scored three tries in four tests for Toa Samoa. He emphasized his desire to honor his Samoan heritage, saying his "old man is Samoan" and he plays for him as a tribute.

Despite missing the start of the 2026 season due to shoulder surgery and participating in just four games this year, Nanai viewed his return to Camp Maroon as largely unexpected. He replaces Kulikefu Finefeuiaki in Queensland’s 19-man squad; Finefeuiaki made his Origin debut in Game Two. Nanai expressed respect for his former Dolphins clubmate’s recent debut but emphasized his focus on contributing to the Maroons’ cause in the decider.

Queensland coach Billy Slater is expected to utilize Nanai’s notable athleticism and leaping ability as part of the team’s strategy, particularly in contesting high kicks from Queensland halfback Sam Walker. Nanai, a former junior volleyball player, is known for his exceptional aerial skills and ability to be a lethal kick-chase threat. He acknowledged the quality of Walker's play this season and mentioned the potential for a strong connection with either Walker or teammate Cameron Munster.

Nanai described his rehabilitation from injury as a challenging and lonely process but expressed gratitude for the opportunity to return to top-level competition. He underscored his commitment to preparation and confidence in making a significant impact in the upcoming match, suggesting that fulfilling his role effectively could help Queensland overcome New South Wales in the series finale.
