Naomi Watts, the British-born Australian actress and producer, will be honored with a lifetime achievement award at Spain’s San Sebastian Film Festival next month, festival organizers announced on Monday. The event, widely regarded as one of the most prestigious in the Spanish-speaking world, will take place from September 18 to 26 in the northern coastal city of San Sebastian, with the award ceremony scheduled for September 19.

Watts, 57, has been recognized as one of the most talented and distinguished actresses of her generation. She gained international attention with her role in David Lynch’s 2001 film "Mulholland Drive" and has built a diverse career spanning both auteur-driven cinema and larger productions. She received Academy Award nominations for her performances in “21 Grams” (2003), directed by Mexican filmmaker Alejandro González Iñárritu, and “The Impossible” (2012), directed by Spain’s Juan Antonio Bayona.

Her filmography includes other notable works such as Iñárritu’s “Birdman” (2014), Woody Allen’s “You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger” (2010), and Michael Haneke’s “Funny Games” (1997). In television, Watts earned an Emmy nomination for her role in Ryan Murphy’s miniseries “Feud: Capote vs. The Swans,” where she also had credit as an executive producer.

In recent years, Watts has also been active in raising awareness on women’s health issues, particularly concerning menopause.

Following the award ceremony, the festival will screen “The Housewife,” a new film starring Watts as the mysterious spouse of a suspected former Nazi official living in 1960s New York. Additionally, German director, screenwriter, producer, and actor Werner Herzog will be honored with a Donostia Award at this year’s festival.

The Donostia Prize has previously been awarded to prominent figures such as Gregory Peck, Bette Davis, Lauren Bacall, Francis Ford Coppola, Woody Allen, Oliver Stone, Agnes Varda, Catherine Deneuve, and Pedro Almodóvar.
