A Naperville man was sentenced to 38 years in prison for the fatal assault of his wife in March 2020. Alan Wang, 62, formerly residing on North Mill Street, was convicted of two counts of first-degree murder following a bench trial in DuPage County Circuit Court. The sentencing was handed down by Judge Celine O’Hallaren Walsh.

The victim, 35-year-old Hongyan Yang, died after Wang repeatedly kicked her, an attack reportedly triggered by Wang discovering text messages from another man on Yang’s phone. Authorities were called to the couple’s home on March 9, 2020, after a relative found Yang unresponsive. An autopsy conducted by the DuPage County coroner’s office determined the cause of death to be blunt force trauma due to assault.

Wang was initially arrested on charges of domestic battery, but prosecutors upgraded the charges to murder in September 2020 as evidence emerged during investigation. The trial took place in October 2025, lasting four days during which the judge heard all testimony without a jury.

State’s Attorney Robert Berlin emphasized the broader implications of the case, highlighting that domestic violence remains a persistent issue. “The violent beating Alan Wang administered to his wife that resulted in her death is yet another tragic reminder that domestic violence continues to plague society,” Berlin said in a statement. He also referenced statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Violent Death Reporting System, noting that in 2023, 1,373 women were killed by a spouse or intimate partner in the United States.

Under the terms of the sentence, Wang must serve the full 38 years before becoming eligible for parole. The DuPage County state’s attorney’s office underscored the severity of the sentence as a response to the fatal consequences of domestic violence.
