Nashville SC secured the Supporters’ Shield as the top team in Major League Soccer with a 2-0 victory over CF Montreal on Saturday. The win, which took place at Montreal’s home stadium, extended Nashville’s unbeaten streak to seven games and solidified their position at the summit of the league standings.
Nashville improved to 21-3-7 with 70 points, maintaining their momentum with a five-win and two-draw run in those seven games. In contrast, Montreal’s struggles continued as the home team fell to 6-18-7 with 25 points and was officially eliminated from playoff contention after securing just one victory in their last 11 matches.
The breakthrough came early in the second half when Nashville’s Sam Surridge scored his 18th goal of the season in the 52nd minute. Surridge capitalized on his own rebound after Montreal goalkeeper Samsy Keita, making his MLS debut at 17 years old, initially saved a header from a cross by Reed Baker-Whiting. Surridge quickly reacted to the loose ball and easily converted to give Nashville the lead.
Nashville doubled their advantage in the 76th minute through Hany Mukhtar. Mukhtar intercepted a clearing attempt by Montreal defender Brayan Vera outside the penalty area and was first to the ball as it rolled inside the box. His shot, which deflected off Keita, found the top right corner of the net. Mukhtar almost added another goal late in the match but was denied by Keita’s glove in the 80th minute.
The result further capped an impressive regular season campaign for Nashville SC, who will enter the MLS playoffs as the top seed following this decisive win. Meanwhile, Montreal will look to regroup after a difficult season that ended without a playoff berth.
