A powerful nor’easter is projected to impact the New York City area this weekend, bringing heavy rain, strong winds, and coastal flooding, according to meteorologists and city officials. The storm is expected to affect eastern Long Island and the Rockaways most severely, with wind gusts reaching up to 60 mph beginning Friday afternoon.

Meteorologist Dan Pydynkowski of AccuWeather described the system as a “significant September nor’easter” capable of causing power outages. Most of New York City will likely experience heavy rainfall accompanied by wind gusts ranging between 40 and 50 mph. Rainfall totals are expected to reach 2 to 3 inches in some areas.

The storm’s intensity is forecast to peak on Saturday night before subsiding on Sunday, when conditions should become less severe. Pydynkowski advised residents to prepare for potential temporary blackouts lasting anywhere from 12 to 18 hours. He recommended keeping flashlights on hand and ensuring mobile devices are fully charged.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams also issued a warning for residents living near vulnerable coastal areas. While the storm is expected to remain offshore, sparing the city from its heaviest rainfall, it could still produce gusty winds, significant rain, and flooding along the coastline. Adams urged residents to monitor weather updates closely and take necessary precautions.

Emergency management agencies are coordinating preparedness efforts as the nor’easter approaches, aiming to mitigate disruptions and ensure public safety throughout the weekend.
