A member of the National Guard was shot and injured late Sunday night while attempting to intervene in a fight in Washington, D.C., authorities reported. The incident occurred around 11:10 p.m. in the Eastern Market neighborhood, located in the southeast part of the city.

According to Jeffery Carroll, interim chief of the Metropolitan Police Department of Washington, seven or eight National Guard members were monitoring the altercation from a parked van on a sidewalk when they decided to step in to break up the confrontation. During the intervention, one of the individuals involved in the fight produced a firearm and opened fire.

The suspect fled into a nearby alley, where members of the National Guard ordered him to drop his weapon. Instead, the individual pointed the gun at the guardsmen, who then returned fire. Both the National Guard member and the suspect sustained gunshot wounds and were taken to local hospitals for treatment.

Authorities have not released further details on the condition of those involved or any charges filed. The investigation remains ongoing. The National Guard personnel were performing a security role in the area at the time of the incident.
