Malaysian football made a notable addition to its squad as naturalized player Manuel Hidalgo marked his international debut with a strong performance in midfield during Malaysia’s 3-0 victory over Bangladesh. The Group A fixture of the FIFA Asean Cup took place on Friday at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Hidalgo, 27, who plays as a winger for Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT), was deployed in a new role as the team’s playmaker wearing the No. 10 jersey. His contribution included effective ball retention and several incisive passes that helped spark Malaysia’s attacking moves. The match also saw Arif Aiman Hanapi score twice and Bergson da Silva net his first goal for the national team, securing a comfortable win.

This game was Hidalgo’s first official cap for Malaysia, following approval for him and two other players to represent the country. Another debutant was Australian-born defender Bradley Tapp, eligible to play through his Malaysian mother from Penang. Bergson da Silva also made his introductory appearance during the match.

Hidalgo expressed satisfaction with his debut and comfort in the midfield position, noting continuity with his club role. He highlighted the confidence instilled by the coaching staff and the support from teammates. “It’s easier when you play with great teammates like the ones in this squad. The coach gave me a lot of confidence and let me play my game, which is important,” he said. Hidalgo is also known for his admiration of Argentinian football legend Diego Maradona, commemorated by a tattoo.

Acknowledging the difference between international and club football, Hidalgo remarked on the pride that comes with representing a nation. “It’s different in terms of representing such a big country at the international level, but I take it with pride and without pressure,” he added.

The win proved a significant confidence boost for Malaysia as they prepare for their next match against Indonesia at the same venue. Hidalgo recognized the challenge ahead, describing Indonesia as a “super strong team,” but expressed optimism in Malaysia’s ability to compete. “It’s going to be a tough match, but I’m looking forward to playing – this is the kind of match I love to play,” he said.
