Thirteen-year-old sailing skipper Summer Newman is competing independently this year in the South Australian Women’s Keelboat Regatta, which concludes today off North Haven. Summer, who previously sailed alongside her mother Renee Newman and grandmother Anita Saunders as part of the three-generation crew known as the “Nauti Girls,” is now helming her own boat with two friends.

The regatta has drawn 30 entries from across Australia, including participants from South Australia, Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland, and the Northern Territory. This turnout marks the event as one of the largest national women’s sailing regattas in the country.

The competition features a diverse mix of sailors, including several with experience in the renowned Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race. Among the seasoned competitors is Mary Ann Harvey, skipper and co-owner of the boat Clockwork.

The regatta also highlights strong family connections within the sport. Four mother-daughter teams are competing, along with two boats crewed by three generations from the same family. One such boat is Young Einstein, which is skippered by Jess Overelle. These multi-generational teams reflect the event’s emphasis on fostering family participation and supporting female sailors across age groups.
