The NBA and the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) reiterated their commitment to launching a new basketball league in Europe, despite the EuroLeague’s recent rejection of their initial merger proposal. The two organizations expressed optimism about continuing discussions and indicated that the planned league could move forward as early as the fall of 2027.
In a joint statement released on Tuesday, the NBA and FIBA emphasized the potential benefits of a partnership that would unify the European basketball landscape. They highlighted that cooperation among the EuroLeague, FIBA, and the NBA could significantly expand the sport’s reach and enhance opportunities for clubs, players, and fans across the continent.
The EuroLeague, however, declined the first merger offer earlier this week. Despite this setback, the talks have not stalled entirely. Barcelona, a prominent EuroLeague club, suggested that the door remains open for future negotiations, contingent on amendments to the current proposal. The club indicated that any revised offer would be given fresh consideration by both itself and the EuroLeague.
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has repeatedly voiced his belief that the new league would gain from integrating EuroLeague clubs. Speaking last month at the NBA Board of Governors meeting, Silver described the potential union as beneficial, though not strictly necessary, noting that “we all would be better off as a unified front in Europe.”
The envisioned league aims to create a more cohesive structure for European basketball, potentially addressing the fragmentation that exists between different governing bodies and competitions. Officials from both the NBA and FIBA have suggested that such a coalition could unlock significant growth and unlock the sport’s full potential in Europe.
While discussions are ongoing, the NBA and FIBA remain resolved to proceed with their plans to establish the league in 2027, signaling a strategic effort to reshape professional basketball on the continent, regardless of how swiftly an agreement with the EuroLeague is reached.
