Nearly 13,000 people attended the opening weekend of this year’s Illuminate festival in Christchurch, marking the largest turnout yet for the annual light show. The event, held in the Christchurch Botanic Gardens, began on Friday night after a brief delay that organizers said ultimately created ideal conditions for the outdoor festival.

Illuminate managing director Philip Anderson reported that 5,000 ticket holders entered on opening night. The following evening saw ticket sales reach 7,500, with additional gate sales after 8 p.m. bringing Saturday’s total attendance close to 8,000. The festival’s popularity has continued to grow as it tours various locations across the country, backed by a Christchurch-based company.

The festival offers a range of interactive and visually striking installations designed to engage visitors and encourage social media sharing. Highlights include a brightly illuminated two-meter yellow rubber duck floating in a pond, shimmering walls, an LED tunnel, and six water cannons capable of shooting water jets up to 30 meters into the air.

Philip Anderson noted the universal appeal of light shows, emphasizing their ability to create a joyful atmosphere for attendees. The Illuminate festival remains a significant cultural event for Christchurch, attracting large crowds and offering an immersive artistic experience.
