Bentley is moving away from hybrid technology with the introduction of a new high-performance variant of its Bentayga SUV, opting instead for a refined version of its 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine. The decision, driven by Bentley’s CEO Frank-Steffen Walliser, marks a shift toward a more dynamic and engaging driving experience amid tightening emissions regulations that led to the discontinuation of the brand’s W12 engine.
The latest Bentayga Speed delivers 478 kW of power and 850 Nm of torque, matching the output of the previous W12 model but shedding approximately 200 kilograms by eliminating the hybrid system’s heavy battery and electric components. This reduction in weight enhances the vehicle’s balance and responsiveness. Equipped with launch control, the Bentayga Speed can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.6 seconds, placing it on par with competitors such as the plug-in hybrid BMW M5 Touring. Its top speed reaches 310 km/h.
Aside from the powertrain upgrade, Bentley engineers focused on improving driving dynamics. Adjustments to the air suspension, dampers, and the addition of rear-wheel steering contribute to sharper handling and more precise cornering. The SUV now offers a sport-oriented ESC Dynamic mode, which allows for controlled throttle-induced slides, providing a higher level of driver engagement not previously seen in the Bentayga lineup.
The new model also features an optional lightweight titanium exhaust system developed by the same manufacturer that supplies Lamborghini. This exhaust enhances the engine sound with pronounced pops and crackles, a marked departure from Bentley’s traditionally restrained acoustic signature. The exhaust option reduces weight by an additional 12.5 kilograms.
Despite these advancements, some critics note trade-offs in the driving experience. The new V8 might lack the immediate throttle response and low-end punch of the outgoing W12, though it is generally praised for its distinctive and smoother sound. Additionally, ride quality can be compromised on larger 23-inch wheels, especially in Sport mode, due to harsher impacts over irregular surfaces.
Inside, the Bentayga Speed maintains Bentley’s hallmark luxury with high-quality materials, meticulous craftsmanship, and a comprehensive suite of physical controls. However, this level of refinement comes at a significant cost. Base prices start at approximately A$525,000, excluding taxes and fees. Options such as the titanium exhaust (£7,740 or about A$14,500) and the Dynamic pack—which includes carbon-ceramic brakes and launch control (£10,370 or roughly A$19,500)—add considerable expense. Buyers can also customize their vehicle with extensive choices of paint colors, leather upholstery, and veneer trims, further increasing the price.
While the Bentayga Speed commands a premium price, its combination of performance, luxury, and exclusivity continues to appeal to discerning customers. Comparisons to rivals like the Aston Martin DBX707—which offers strong performance at a significantly lower price—highlight the Bentayga Speed’s emphasis on craftsmanship and presence as much as outright driving capability.
