A pub in Norwich, Norfolk, has faced complaints from local residents following the installation of a 24-hour launderette outside its premises. The Woodman, seeking to supplement its income amid financial pressures such as the reduction of Covid-related government support, increased National Insurance contributions, and a rise in the minimum wage, introduced a self-service laundry facility featuring two industrial-sized washing machines and a large dryer.

Neighbors have raised concerns about noise and light pollution generated by the launderette. The standalone unit’s bright blue lighting, which was left on throughout the night, along with the disturbance caused by the machines in operation, drew criticism from residents who described the facility as intrusive and visually discordant with the surrounding area. Some locals also reported issues with increased parking congestion linked to the launderette’s use.

Pippa Lain-Smith, a resident directly opposite The Woodman, characterized the setup as “an eyesore” that disrupts the neighborhood’s character and noted that the nighttime lighting contributes to excessive light pollution.

In response to the backlash, the owners of The Woodman agreed to adjust operating hours for the launderette. The facility will now be available from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Additionally, Norfolk county councillor Antony Little, representing the area, confirmed that he had engaged with the pub’s management to address the concerns. The owners have consented to install a timer to switch off the external lighting at closing time, rather than leaving it on overnight.

The Woodman did not provide a comment on the situation when approached.
