Bahraini-Egyptian musician Yahya Hany Al Sayed, known professionally as Neon Sfynx, has released his first protest single titled "HUH?", marking a departure from his usual introspective style. The 28-year-old artist, who resides in Bu Quwah, designed the track to address global issues and critique how certain narratives are prioritized—or overlooked—in foreign media coverage.

Unlike his previous work, which often took the form of personal journal entries set to music, "HUH?" adopts a more outward-looking perspective. The fast-paced, emotionally charged song was inspired by frustration over media representation, particularly following the escalation of the Israel-Gaza conflict in October 2023. Neon Sfynx said the track’s lyrics and tone were deliberately crafted to reflect anger and provoke reflection on why some stories receive attention while others remain marginalized.

The single, running just under three minutes, was created entirely in a home recording setup. Neon Sfynx employed minimal equipment, using only a laptop, guitar, and microphone. Vocals were recorded under a blanket to ensure sound quality, and mix tests were conducted in his car to confirm the audio’s impact across different listening environments. He explained that the songwriting process began with the music to capture the right emotional tone—anger in this case—before developing the lyrics, which required careful balancing between message clarity, lyrical economy, and catchiness.

"HUH?" features a memorable refrain: "The boys and the girls don’t care about the bombs and the guns in the air," designed to resonate with listeners and underscore the song’s themes. Neon Sfynx emphasized the intentionality behind his word choices, aiming to highlight the disparity in media focus and public awareness of global conflicts.

On the origin of his stage name, Neon Sfynx clarified a common misconception. Contrary to assumptions that the "Sfynx" element relates to his Egyptian heritage, he explained it stems from a 1970s jazz slang reference to "cats" used for musicians. Being bald, he was nicknamed a "bald sphinx cat," and given the sci-fi and synth influences in his rock music, the name "Neon Sfynx" was born.

"HUH?" is Neon Sfynx’s ninth single and a precursor to his upcoming debut album, "Slingshot." The track is available on major streaming platforms including Spotify, Apple Music, and iTunes. Further updates can be found on his Instagram profile, @neonsfynx.
