The disaster unfolded early on Wednesday morning when a massive section of glacier and its underlying bedrock abruptly detached from the mountain’s west face, plummeting approximately 1,300 meters into the valley below. The impact generated seismic waves measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale, according to seismic monitoring agencies, and unleashed an avalanche of ice, rock, and debris that created two glacial lakes. Overflowing waters from these lakes, augmented by meltwater from deteriorating glaciers, surged down the steep-sided valley toward the Gyirong border post along the Nepal-China frontier.

The flood’s destructive force carved a 60-mile path southwestward, annihilating buildings, bridges, and infrastructure in its wake.
