The signing window for the Super Netball league may open as early as next week, with negotiations on the Collective Player Agreement progressing as planned. Although all players are out of contract this year, their agreements remain in effect until the end of September. Stakeholders, including the Australian Netball Players Association, clubs, and Netball Australia, are not expected to experience the prolonged negotiation delays seen in 2023.
A key focus of the ongoing discussions involves determining the structure for the upcoming season. Netball Australia has postponed any league expansion plans for 2027, citing an insufficient preparation period despite having invited expressions of interest from potential new teams last year. However, the option to expand in 2028 remains open.
Positive developments include the finalization of a five-year free-to-air broadcast agreement with Channel 9, enhancing the competition’s visibility across Australia. Additionally, there is notable commercial interest in acquiring the league’s naming rights following Suncorp’s decision to end its decade-long sponsorship. Netball Australia is also exploring the introduction of a new format referred to as “Carnival Round,” a gather-round concept aimed at creating a unique event within the season.
Meanwhile, the Giants have confirmed the reappointment of Nerida Stewart as head coach and Jen Wright as her assistant for the upcoming season. The club struggled in the previous year, recording only one win amid various injury challenges. Stewart expressed enthusiasm about continuing in the role alongside Wright, emphasizing the importance of strong partnerships in developing successful programs.
As the league awaits the formal opening of the player signing period, the focus remains on finalizing the Collective Player Agreement and clarifying the competition’s future framework amid evolving broadcast and sponsorship arrangements.
