Netflix is set to release a new adaptation of the classic 1935 book *Little House on the Prairie* in 2026, bringing the story of a pioneering family in the 19th-century American West to a contemporary audience. The series explores the experiences of the Ingalls family as they face the challenges and hardships of frontier life, while navigating broader settler-colonial and Indigenous histories.
Australian actor Luke Bracey stars as Charles Ingalls, the family patriarch. He emphasized the enduring nature of the story’s themes of family resilience and love, noting that these elements have connected with viewers and readers across generations. The series is based on the books written by Laura Elizabeth Ingalls Wilder, which were inspired by her real-life childhood in a pioneer family and originally published in the 1930s and 1940s.
Netflix’s adaptation follows in the footsteps of the well-known 1970s television series that aired on NBC until 1983 but aims to present a fresh perspective on the narrative. Alongside Bracey, the cast includes Alice Halsey as Laura Ingalls, Crosby Fitzgerald as Caroline Ingalls, the mother, and Skywalker Hughes as Mary Ingalls, Laura’s older sister.
Halsey highlighted the gender dynamics depicted in the story, particularly the limited opportunities available to girls during the era. She reflected on how the restrictions faced by Laura in the 1800s contrast with the freedoms enjoyed today, underscoring the historical context of the character’s upbringing.
The new series is led by creator and showrunner Rebecca Sonnenshine, who has already secured a renewal for a second season prior to the first season’s premiere. The initial season consists of eight episodes and is scheduled to debut on Netflix on Thursday.
Skywalker Hughes, portraying Mary Ingalls, shared enthusiasm about continuing the story beyond the first season, expressing excitement over the opportunities to further develop the characters and their experiences in the new episodes.
