Contract extension discussions between the Brooklyn Nets and Michael Porter Jr. are continuing but show no signs of urgency or imminent resolution, according to Nets general manager Sean Marks.
Porter, who emerged as Brooklyn’s leading scorer last season during a career-best performance, is eligible for a contract extension but will become an unrestricted free agent after the current season. Despite being extension-eligible since July 6, both the team and the player appear to be approaching negotiations with a measured pace.
Marks acknowledged the ongoing dialogue but emphasized that there is no deadline pressuring either party. “We are in no hurry to do this. I don’t think he’s in any particular hurry either,” Marks said. He added that both sides have ample time to reach a mutually agreeable deal, noting the absence of any immediate expiration on the negotiations.
Porter, 28, is currently playing under a $40.8 million expiring contract and can sign an extension at any point during the season. Although he is eligible for a maximum offer of up to four years and $234 million, it is widely expected that he will not pursue that level of contract. Questions remain as to the precise terms Porter and his agent, Mark Bartelstein, might seek in extension talks.
When asked about the contract situation, Porter focused on basketball rather than financial terms. “I’m just excited to play basketball. I never was a dude who played for a big contract or for the money,” he said. He expressed enthusiasm about being part of the Nets’ organization and highlighted his commitment to the team’s development, stating he looks forward to the progress the younger players will make throughout the season.
During the previous season, Porter averaged 25.6 points on 48.2 percent shooting and nearly 40 percent from three-point range through January. However, after being overlooked for the All-Star Game, his production declined, averaging 20.5 points on 40.9 percent shooting over his last 14 games. Consistency remains a key focus for the Nets.
Marks stressed the importance of Porter’s continued growth, particularly on defense and rebounding, as well as becoming a more complete player. He also underscored the significance of leadership within the locker room, expecting Porter and other veteran players such as Moe Wagner, Keon Ellis, and Julius Randle to lead by example both on and off the court.
As the season progresses, Porter’s name is expected to arise in trade speculation ahead of the trade deadline. Nonetheless, with open-ended contract talks and no pressing timeline, the Nets and Porter appear content to maintain steady conversations without rushing toward an immediate agreement.
