Bayern Munich goalkeeper and captain Manuel Neuer has indicated that he is "very likely" to retire at the conclusion of the upcoming season. The 40-year-old spoke during a training camp in southern Bavaria on Tuesday, suggesting that this campaign will probably be his last in professional football.

Neuer, who signed a one-year contract extension in May, attributed his decision to continue playing to the strength of the current Bayern squad. "In 85 percent of cases, I probably would have retired," he said, "but being part of this squad—along with the staff and coaching team—is just fun."

Despite a series of muscle injuries that sidelined him for several matches last season, Neuer has maintained a high level of performance. He missed Bayern’s 3-0 German Cup final victory over Stuttgart in May and was temporarily replaced by backup goalkeeper Jonas Urbig. Bayern secured both the Bundesliga and German Cup titles in the 2025-26 season but were eliminated from the UEFA Champions League in the semifinals by eventual winners Paris Saint-Germain.

Looking ahead, Bayern remains a strong favorite to claim another Bundesliga crown and is considered one of the leading contenders in the Champions League. However, Neuer emphasized that he does not view the coming season as a farewell tour. "I’m not playing these matches just to say, ‘This is my last game,’” he noted. "It doesn’t matter if I might have visited a particular stadium for the last time."

Neuer’s international career has also been notable. The 2014 World Cup champion retired from international duty following Euro 2024 but briefly returned for the most recent World Cup. Germany’s campaign ended prematurely with a last-32 loss to Paraguay.

Since joining Bayern Munich from Schalke in 2011, Neuer has amassed an impressive trophy collection, including 13 Bundesliga titles, six German Cups, and two UEFA Champions League trophies.
