Paramount+ has announced a new animated series expanding the “Avatar: The Last Airbender” universe, focusing on Avatar Kuruk, a Water Tribe Avatar who lived three generations before the original series’ protagonist, Aang. The new project, titled “Avatar Kuruk: Wave of Chaos,” was revealed during a panel at New York Comic-Con on Friday.
The series will be helmed by Bryan Konietzko, one of the franchise’s original co-creators alongside Michael Dante DiMartino, with Konietzko acting as showrunner. Production will be handled by Avatar Studios in partnership with Nickelodeon Animation Studio.
“Avatar Kuruk: Wave of Chaos” will follow the titular character as a rebellious teenager who defies centuries of Avatar tradition by traveling the world to master all four elements. According to the official synopsis, Kuruk's journey involves evading his irate mentor, confronting unruly pirates, and navigating confrontations with chaotic spirits, all while striving to positively impact the world around him in his own distinctive manner.
Paramount+ has released first-look images featuring Avatar Kuruk alongside his companion, a pet named Nikik, but has not announced an official premiere date for the series. Additionally, during the same Comic-Con panel, the streaming platform confirmed that “Avatar: Seven Havens,” the franchise’s most recent series, will be renewed for two more seasons, designated as Books 3 and 4.
