Window to the World Communications, the nonprofit organization that owns Chicago’s public television station WTTW-Ch. 11 and classical radio station WFMT-FM 98.7, has named Cary McMillan as chairman of its board for a renewable two-year term beginning July 1.

McMillan, a longtime board member and experienced financial executive, brings a background in corporate leadership to the role. He is the former CEO of True Partners, a tax and financial consulting firm that was acquired by accounting firm Baker Tilly in 2022. His previous positions include roles at Sara Lee and Arthur Andersen, and he has served on corporate boards such as Hyatt Hotels and McDonald’s.

The appointment comes amid ongoing financial challenges for public broadcasters. Last year, then-President Donald Trump issued an executive order ending federal funding for PBS and NPR. Following that directive, Congress rescinded $1.1 billion from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), the primary federal funding source for public media stations. The CPB subsequently dissolved, prompting significant budget shortfalls across public broadcasting outlets nationwide.

Although a federal judge blocked Trump’s executive order in March, the rescinded funds have not been restored, leaving public stations like WTTW to seek alternative revenue sources. WTTW spokespersons noted the station continues to evaluate the long-term impact of the funding cuts but expressed gratitude for strong community support in Chicago that is helping to address the financial gap.

With McMillan’s financial expertise, Window to the World Communications aims to navigate the uncertain funding environment and sustain its public media operations in the city.
