Sonay Kartal’s breakthrough run at the Wuhan Open came to an end on Sunday as she was defeated by Maja Chwalinska in the final, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2. The 24-year-old British player, returning from a six-month layoff due to a back injury, had surged through the tournament to reach the biggest final of her career, but ultimately fell to the 25-year-old Polish player who claimed her first WTA 1000 title.
Kartal, ranked 170th at the start of the event, became the lowest-ranked player to reach a final at this level since the format’s introduction in 2009, and only the second British woman to reach a WTA 1000 final, following Johanna Konta. Her run included wins over several top players such as Belinda Bencic, Jasmine Paolini, Elina Svitolina, and Jelena Ostapenko. The Brighton native, who had limited success in previous years and only one smaller tour title in Tunisia earlier in 2024, now ascends to a new career-high ranking of world No. 49, becoming Britain’s top-ranked female player, surpassing Katie Boulter and Emma Raducanu.
The final showcased contrasting styles. Kartal started strong, using an aggressive forehand and tactical patience to dismantle Chwalinska’s unconventional game based on spins, slices, and angles. She broke serve multiple times to secure a commanding first set. However, the physical toll of Kartal’s lengthy recovery and match intensity appeared to impact her stamina, with fatigue becoming increasingly evident as the match progressed. Chwalinska capitalized on this, applying pressure on Kartal’s serve, converting multiple break points, and gradually shifting momentum.
Chwalinska, who had a career-defining breakthrough earlier this year by reaching the French Open final as a qualifier, overcame a challenging year marked by injury setbacks—including an ankle twist at Wimbledon and some early exits in major tournaments. Her resilience was apparent in Wuhan as she fought back from a set and break down to win her first title at the WTA 1000 level and move closer to the top 10 in the rankings.
Both players acknowledged the match’s physical and emotional demands. Kartal described it as a “very physical battle” and noted that the effects of her recent injury hiatus played a role, yet expressed satisfaction with her performance overall despite the loss. Chwalinska reflected on her recent struggles with criticism and injuries, saying the victory felt especially meaningful after persevering through tough moments.
Kartal’s achievement marks a significant milestone in her career and British women’s tennis, demonstrating her return to form after injury. Meanwhile, Chwalinska’s victory consolidates her status as an emerging force on the WTA Tour, continuing a season of notable comebacks.
