Kobie Turner, defensive tackle for the Los Angeles Rams, is navigating his second NFL training camp with a new role off the field: father. Turner, who welcomed his daughter Rowan Alma Turner four months ago, said becoming a parent during the offseason has provided him with added focus and motivation as he prepares for the upcoming season.

The 24-year-old defensive lineman, who had a breakthrough campaign last year recording 11 sacks, credited fatherhood with deepening his sense of purpose both in and out of the football facility. “It gives you a little bit more reason, and it also gives you a lot more focus,” Turner said, noting his desire to balance his work ethic with quality time at home.

Turner’s evolution comes amid the Rams’ early training camp sessions where he has been spending time alongside reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett. While Garrett’s physical attributes — size, speed, and athleticism — are well recognized, Turner has highlighted the veteran’s attention to detail and methodical approach to pass rushing as particularly instructive.

“He pays a lot of attention [to detail]. I see him taking notes all the time,” Turner said, pointing to Garrett’s ability to simplify his moves and rely on refined mechanics. Turner is aiming to emulate this approach by focusing on fundamentals such as getting to the top of the rush and letting his technique guide his play, rather than adding complexity to his skill set.

Rams head coach Sean McVay acknowledged the positive impact Garrett has had on younger players like Turner, praising Garrett’s willingness to share knowledge and foster a productive environment. “What a great teammate he’s been in terms of imparting wisdom,” McVay said.

Turner’s offseason also included major life milestones beyond football, including marriage followed by fatherhood, which has brought a new dimension to his perspective. He described the experience of balancing professional demands and family life with warmth; for example, singing “How Deep Is Your Love” by the Bee Gees to his daughter as a nightly routine to help her settle.

Alongside other players in the league adjusting to parenthood, such as All-Pro wide receiver Puka Nacua, Turner’s story reflects the growing awareness among professional athletes of how family responsibilities influence their personal and professional priorities.
