New details have emerged regarding the fatal shooting of a bicyclist near Grant Park in Chicago in the early hours of June 16. Prosecutors reported that Malik Jones, 27, was riding his bike along East Jackson Drive around 12:15 a.m. when he was shot multiple times. Jones was transported to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in critical condition but was later pronounced dead. The Cook County medical examiner ruled the death a homicide resulting from multiple gunshot wounds.
Eighteen hours after the incident, authorities arrested 18-year-old Eliel Argudo-Tenorio of Oak Park. He faces a charge of first-degree murder and was ordered held without bond following a detention hearing. Prosecutors provided a more detailed account of events leading up to the shooting during court proceedings.
According to the prosecution, Argudo-Tenorio attended a birthday celebration on the night of June 15 with several other individuals. After the gathering, the group left in a caravan of six vehicles and stopped along the far-right lane of East Jackson Drive shortly after 11:40 p.m. Argudo-Tenorio reportedly exited from the rear passenger seat of a white Mazda, along with others, and they began drinking and socializing on the sidewalk.
Police surveillance footage shows Jones, who prosecutors say did not know Argudo-Tenorio, riding a bicycle on DuSable Lake Shore Drive before turning westbound onto Jackson Drive, coming toward the group. The footage indicates that Argudo-Tenorio produced a handgun from the front passenger window of one of the vehicles and immediately pointed it at Jones. Jones is then seen pedaling away while glancing back toward Argudo-Tenorio before disappearing from camera view.
Prosecutors said Argudo-Tenorio followed Jones out of the camera’s range and fired, striking him in the right thigh. Afterward, Argudo-Tenorio returned the firearm through the vehicle window and fled to the white Mazda. The entire group then left the scene, driving westbound toward Michigan Avenue.
Police responded to emergency calls reporting shots fired and found Jones on the ground near where the vehicles had been parked. A license plate reader identified the fleeing Mazda, which was later recovered at a residence in the Irving Park neighborhood. Three individuals from the caravan were inside the vehicle at that time.
One witness told investigators that Argudo-Tenorio admitted to the shooting during the getaway, stating, “’I blew, I blew, I blew,’” and acknowledged his error. Other witnesses said they dropped Argudo-Tenorio off at his Oak Park home following the incident.
Argudo-Tenorio was arrested at his residence on South Humphrey Avenue in Oak Park. Prosecutors noted that his juvenile record includes prior offenses such as burglary, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon in 2023, and possession of a stolen vehicle in 2024. His next court appearance is scheduled for July 7.
