Bangladesh’s national football team has integrated several new players ahead of the inaugural FIFA ASEAN Cup, with midfielder Shamit Shome expressing optimism about the squad's potential and readiness.

Shome, who joined the team on September 21, highlighted the positive impact the newcomers have had during the initial training sessions. “Everyone brings something valuable to the group, which will improve our squad and raise the level of competition,” he said in a video message. He emphasized a shared objective among the players: to perform well, secure victories, and achieve success for Bangladesh.

The team’s new additions include overseas-based players such as Hamza Choudhury, Shamit himself, Zayyan Ahmed, and Fahamedul Islam. Head coach Thomas Dooley has also welcomed defender Zidane Yousuf, forward Farhaan Ali Wahid, and midfielder Shuki Itofusa to the squad, marking a notable reshaping of the team’s lineup.

At 29, Shome views the ASEAN Cup as a significant platform for Bangladesh to demonstrate their capabilities. “This is a major tournament, a FIFA event, so it’s a fantastic opportunity for Bangladesh to prove that we can compete at a higher level,” he said. The midfielder acknowledged that, despite joining just days before the tournament’s commencement, the squad’s preparation had been promising.

“It feels great to be playing with everyone again after a couple of months away. The team is looking very sharp, and training has gone really well. I believe our preparation has been solid,” Shome added, noting his current engagement with New York Cosmos.

Bangladesh is set to open its campaign against Malaysia on September 25, the tournament’s first day, with the team aiming to leverage its refreshed roster and concerted training efforts to make a strong showing in the competition.
