Beavers are increasingly expanding their range into northern and Arctic regions of Canada, a shift attributed largely to the effects of climate change. Traditionally confined to more temperate forests and waters, these rodents have now established populations well above the tree line, including in subarctic communities like Umiujaq in northern Quebec and even in hamlets such as Tuktoyaktuk, located roughly 200 miles north of the Arctic Circle.
The northward migration of beavers is linked to rising temperatures, earlier snowmelt, longer growing seasons, and the spread of shrubs across the tundra, a process referred to as “shrubification.” These environmental changes have made conditions more hospitable for beavers, enabling them to build dams and ponds in new territories. Scientists characterize beavers as “ecosystem engineers” because their dam-building activities significantly alter local hydrology. In the Arctic, their ponds contribute to permafrost thawing, creating wetlands rich in vegetation and accelerating the release of methane, a potent greenhouse gas.
Local Indigenous communities, such as the Inuit in Umiujaq, have had little interaction historically with beavers, which are common symbols in southern Canada. However, their arrival has prompted mixed responses. While beavers are a celebrated part of Canadian heritage and played a pivotal role in the country's early exploration and economy—largely through the fur trade—their ecological impact in northern regions has raised concerns. In Umiujaq, beaver dams have blocked rivers that serve as spawning grounds for Arctic char, a fish species crucial to Inuit subsistence and cultural practices. Efforts are underway by local hunters and wildlife associations to dismantle some dams, as the blockage threatens fish populations and traditional fishing activities.
Some residents express indifference toward beavers, viewing them as novel but not particularly valuable creatures. “They’re just an awful big mouse to us,” said a resident of Tuktoyaktuk, where beavers have been observed constructing dams near freshwater creeks that serve as whitefish spawning sites and navigating brackish harbor waters. Others emphasize the need to learn more about how to coexist with the new arrivals, balancing ecological concerns with cultural priorities.
Scientists continue to monitor the beavers’ impact on Arctic ecosystems as they reshape waterways and influence broader environmental changes. Their presence, along with other species expanding northward—such as moose and new bird and marine mammal species—illustrates the dynamic shifts occurring in Arctic biodiversity as a result of climate-induced habitat transformations. While beavers remain a cherished symbol of Canada, their expanding footprint in northern regions poses ecological challenges and prompts conversations between researchers, Indigenous peoples, and local communities about managing these changes sustainably.
