John Steinbeck’s 1952 novel "East of Eden" is set to be adapted into a new seven-part series on Netflix, offering a fresh take on the classic story. This latest adaptation, developed by Zoe Kazan, granddaughter of the original film’s director Elia Kazan, revisits the narrative that has previously been brought to screen, most notably in the 1955 film directed by her grandfather. That earlier adaptation featured James Dean in his breakthrough role.

In contrast to the original film’s focus on male characters, the new series centers on Cathy Ames, a complex and scheming anti-heroine portrayed by Florence Pugh. Cathy’s manipulative and impactful actions are pivotal to the unfolding drama involving the Trask and Hamilton families, whose lives intertwine in California’s Salinas Valley around the turn of the 20th century and beyond.

Alongside Pugh, the cast includes Mike Faist, Christopher Abbott, and Ciaran Hinds in supporting roles, contributing to a layered retelling of Steinbeck’s exploration of family dynamics, morality, and identity. Zoe Kazan, who serves as the series’ executive producer, has reimagined the source material to highlight different perspectives within the story while maintaining its core themes.
