A musical adaptation of the acclaimed 2014 film *Pride* is set to make its world debut in London this summer, producers have announced. The original film, which stars Bill Nighy and Andrew Scott, is based on the true story of Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners (LGSM), a campaign that supported striking miners during the 1980s National Union of Mineworkers strike.
The new stage production reunites director Matthew Warchus and writer Stephen Beresford, who collaborated on the film more than a decade ago. Following a sold-out preview run at the Sherman Theatre in Cardiff, the musical will open at London’s Dorfman Theatre as part of a National Theatre production.
The cast features Jhon Lumsden and Samuel Barnett portraying members of the unlikely alliance between LGSM activists and South Wales miners, driven by the real-life activists who formed the core of LGSM. In an advance glimpse of the show, Matthew Woodyatt appears as miner Dai Donovan, leading the ensemble in the musical number “You Stood By Me.”
Warchus highlighted the extraordinary nature of the story, calling it “so unlikely to be true” that it challenges belief. To deepen the production’s connection to its historical roots, the cast and crew recently visited the former miners’ welfare hall in the Upper Swansea Valley. The venue was once a central hub for LGSM activities, and the team met with local community members who inspired both the original film and the musical adaptation.
