A new profession known as "back-scratching therapist" has gained traction in Shenzhen, a major city in southeastern China. This emerging service involves clients paying 300 yuan (approximately RM180) per hour for therapeutic sessions designed to promote relaxation and stress relief.

The offerings are divided into two distinct treatments: "scratching" and "tickling." The scratching service features gentle, soothing strokes aimed at helping clients unwind and fall asleep more easily. In contrast, the tickling option provides a more intense tactile sensation intended to facilitate the release of built-up stress and emotional tension.

The business was launched by a 32-year-old entrepreneur who drew inspiration from his own childhood experience, when his father would rub his back to help him sleep. Since its inception, the entrepreneur has expanded his enterprise to include two locations within Shenzhen. These outlets reportedly generate combined monthly revenues exceeding 100,000 yuan (around RM59,800). The founder noted that both shops achieved profitability within approximately two months, quickly recovering their initial investments.

This new therapy reflects growing consumer interest in alternative relaxation methods in China’s rapidly urbanizing environments, where stress-related issues are increasingly prevalent. The back-scratching therapy model capitalizes on tactile stimulation as a means to enhance mental and physical well-being.
