“Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” the latest installment in the Spider-Man film series starring Tom Holland and directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, delivered a historic box office performance during its opening weekend. The film generated an estimated $355 million across North America, positioning it as the second-highest opening weekend ever in the region, narrowly trailing “Avengers: Endgame,” which opened to $357 million in 2019.
The film’s strong debut exceeded studio projections, which had anticipated around $325 million. It also marked Sony Pictures’ biggest opening to date. Internationally, “Brand New Day” earned approximately $572 million from more than 73,500 screens worldwide, with China contributing a notable $121 million. This brought the global total to an estimated $927 million, the second biggest worldwide debut behind “Endgame,” which launched with $1.2 billion.
The enthusiastic reception for “Brand New Day” helped boost a record-breaking weekend for North American theaters, with total box office sales reported at around $430 million. On its first day, the film set a new benchmark by earning $168 million from 4,487 theaters in the U.S. and Canada, surpassing the previous single-day record held by “Endgame.”
Tom Holland’s continued portrayal of Spider-Man has been a significant commercial success. The previous installment, “Spider-Man: No Way Home” (2021), remains one of the highest-grossing films globally, with over $1.9 billion in revenue. In addition to his work on “Brand New Day,” Holland also stars alongside Zendaya in Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey,” which ranked second at the box office this past weekend with $51 million in its third week and has amassed $911.4 million worldwide to date.
Audience demographics for “Brand New Day” skewed younger and predominantly male, with about 61 percent male attendees and more than half under the age of 25. The film earned positive reviews, holding a 90 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, an “A” CinemaScore, and a five-star rating on PostTrak. Analysts estimate that roughly 24 million people viewed the new Spider-Man movie during its opening weekend.
Industry figures highlighted the film’s role in signaling a resurgence of interest in blockbuster movies, particularly among younger viewers. Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group Chairman and CEO Tom Rothman credited Tom Holland’s performance as a key factor in the film’s success, and Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige emphasized the enduring appeal of Marvel characters and the anticipation the film sets up for future projects. Producer Amy Pascal noted that the movie’s blend of spectacular action and emotionally resonant storytelling speaks to audiences’ desire for compelling narratives.
Additionally, other PG-rated films remained popular, with “Toy Story 5,” “Minions & Monsters,” and “Moana” rounding out the top five at the box office. The musical film “Hadestown: The Musical” achieved a milestone by becoming the highest-grossing live theater capture release ever domestically.
Market analysts suggest that the strong performances of “Brand New Day” and other recent releases could lead to one of the most successful summer movie seasons in history, potentially surpassing $4 billion in box office revenue for the first time since 2023 and helping the industry approach a $10 billion annual total.
