The New York Islanders secured a commanding 6-0 victory over the New Jersey Devils in their home opener on Saturday night in Elmont. Goaltender Ilya Sorokin was a key factor in the win, recording 36 saves and achieving the 30th shutout of his NHL career, a franchise record.
The Islanders bounced back from a 2-1 loss in their season opener against Toronto with a strong performance both offensively and defensively. Simon Holmstrom, Brayden Schenn, and Bo Horvat provided an early offensive surge in the second period, scoring within a nine-minute span to build a decisive lead. Viktor Eklund, Ondrej Palat, and Casey Cizikas added goals in the third period to extend the margin and seal the shutout.
Reigning Calder Trophy winner Matthew Schaefer contributed two assists, highlighting a well-rounded effort from the Islanders. On the other side, New Jersey goaltender Nico Daws made 26 saves but was unable to prevent the lopsided defeat as the Devils dropped to a 1-1 record after splitting their first two games of the season.
The Islanders’ dominant victory marked a turnaround after their initial setback and demonstrated strong defensive play combined with a balanced scoring attack. The shutout by Sorokin also underscored his growing reputation as one of the league’s top goaltenders.
