A New York Knicks baseball cap produced by New Era has emerged as the world’s most sought-after accessory, according to a recent report by fashion data platform Lyst. The Buffalo-based company, known for its popular gameday merchandise, has seen demand for the Knicks cap surge dramatically in the months following the team’s first NBA championship since 1973.
Lyst’s analysis, which draws on the online shopping habits of more than 160 million luxury consumers, revealed that searches for the Knicks cap rose by an extraordinary 4,276% since March. Priced at around $40, the cap has become highly coveted, with some resellers charging up to $400 due to limited availability. This surge in interest places the Knicks hat ahead of luxury brands such as Chanel, Gucci, and Kim Kardashian’s intimates line Skims, which have historically dominated fashion conversations.
The Knicks’ victory has reignited enthusiasm for team merchandise not only among sports fans but also within the broader fashion community. This renewed popularity extends beyond caps, with Google Trends data showing a 5,000% increase in searches for “Knicks tees” compared to the previous year, and an 800% rise for “Knicks bags.” By comparison, searches for “Chanel bags” increased by a comparatively modest 90%.
Despite being eclipsed in terms of individual item popularity, Chanel remains a dominant force in the luxury market. The French fashion house, which has been in operation for 116 years, was ranked by Lyst as the top overall brand. Chanel’s revenue increased by 16% year-over-year, driven primarily by strong sales in jewelry and watches. The brand has also benefited from the creative direction of new designer Matthieu Blazy, whose appointment in 2025 has garnered positive reviews. Celebrity endorsements from figures such as actor Jacob Elordi and singer Gracie Abrams have further supported Chanel’s market presence.
The Knicks’ success story highlights the growing crossover between sports culture and high fashion, as well as the impact of team achievements on merchandising trends worldwide. Meanwhile, established luxury brands continue to hold their ground through innovation and strategic celebrity partnerships.
