President Donald Trump is scheduled to visit New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani at Gracie Mansion on Monday during his trip to the city for the United Nations General Assembly. According to the mayor’s office, the meeting will focus on issues affecting New York City and its residents. This will mark the first time Trump has visited the official mayoral residence on the Upper East Side.
Trump and Mamdani, who represent vastly different political perspectives, have maintained a notably cordial relationship despite past public clashes. The two first met in person in February, following an earlier meeting shortly after Mamdani’s election victory last year. Mamdani, the city’s first Muslim mayor, has previously criticized Trump’s policies, particularly regarding immigration and foreign affairs, while Trump has offered unexpected praise for Mamdani’s personality and leadership.
Since taking office, Mamdani has made efforts to build a pragmatic working relationship with the Trump administration, leveraging their shared New York roots. In November of last year, Mamdani met with Trump at the White House, where the president expressed optimism about the city’s future despite their political differences. Trump has publicly dismissed some of Mamdani’s earlier harsh criticisms, while the mayor has acknowledged the limits of his authority, notably regarding his campaign pledge to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during the UN assembly—a move Trump dismissed as unrealistic.
The planned Monday meeting comes as Trump prepares to deliver a speech at the UN General Assembly on Tuesday, ahead of Netanyahu’s scheduled address on Thursday. During his visit, Trump is also expected to meet with global leaders to discuss a range of issues, including Middle East conflicts. He is set to return to Washington later in the week for a planned summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping, who has not visited the United States since 2023.
Discussions between Mamdani and Trump are expected to cover challenges facing New York City, such as infrastructure. Mamdani previously advocated for federal support of the Sunnyside Yard project—a major development initiative involving the creation of new housing atop an existing train yard—which requires significant federal investment. However, no substantive progress on this front has been reported since February.
The visit revives a historic but infrequent tradition of sitting presidents visiting Gracie Mansion, with past presidential visits including those by Harry S. Truman, John F. Kennedy, and Ronald Reagan. This meeting highlights the complexity of the relationship between two prominent New Yorkers whose public interactions have at times been marked by sharp rhetoric but also moments of cooperation.
