The New York Red Bulls secured a 2-0 victory over Inter Miami on Saturday, capitalizing on an early own goal and a late score from Emil Forsberg to solidify their position in the Eastern Conference standings. The match was played amid a limited appearance from Inter Miami’s Lionel Messi, who entered the game in the second half after missing the start due to an award ceremony in Spain.
The breakthrough came in the seventh minute when Miami defender Casemiro inadvertently sent the ball into his own net. Despite controlling only 37.5% of possession, the Red Bulls generated 18 shots throughout the match, applying sustained pressure that Miami struggled to contain.
Forsberg, who had not scored since August 15, sealed the victory in stoppage time of the second half. Cameron Harper drove forward down the right wing and delivered a precise pass to an unmarked Forsberg in the center of the box. Forsberg then lifted a right-footed shot over Inter Miami goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair for the team’s second goal.
With the win, New York improved their record to 11-14-6, earning 39 points and moving into eighth place in the Eastern Conference. Red Bulls goalkeeper Ethan Horvath made two critical saves, notably denying a header from Sergio Reguilon following a pass from Messi in the 83rd minute. Horvath was not tested directly by Messi during the game.
Messi, who attended the Princess of Asturias Award for Sport ceremony in Spain on Friday, entered the match in the 56th minute. During his time on the pitch, he took two corner kicks and attempted to create opportunities but was effectively neutralized by Red Bulls defender Dylan Nealis immediately after Forsberg’s goal.
The result marks a rebound for New York after suffering back-to-back losses, demonstrating their ability to capitalize on opposition mistakes and maintain defensive discipline against a side featuring one of the game’s most prominent players. Inter Miami, meanwhile, struggled to convert possession into meaningful chances despite having more control of the ball, a factor that contributed to their defeat.
