Hornicek, a Czech Republic international, had been the subject of interest from other clubs earlier in the transfer window, including Hull City and Benfica.

Hull previously made a move for the goalkeeper, even matching his £25.9 million release clause, but Hornicek declined the transfer. Benfica had also made inquiries about the player. Newcastle’s renewed interest comes after their pursuit of Manchester City’s James Trafford ended with the latter agreeing to join Leeds United for £45 million.

Hornicek recently returned to action in midweek, playing a key role in Braga’s 1-0 victory against Serbian side Zeleznicar Pancevo in a Europa Conference League qualifying match. His performances have highlighted his potential and may accelerate discussions between Newcastle and Sporting Braga.

Newcastle’s goalkeeping options were diminished after Aaron Ramsdale’s loan spell ended, with the player returning to Southampton. Manager Eddie Howe’s side had also engaged with Brighton’s Carl Rushworth as a possible target. However, concerns over Rushworth’s lack of Premier League experience appear to have tempered Newcastle’s interest. Rushworth, who impressed during a loan at Coventry City last season, has attracted offers valued at around £25 million, although Brighton has reportedly rejected those bids. Coventry remains interested in securing his services following a successful campaign that helped them win the Championship.

As Newcastle looks to bolster their squad before the transfer window closes, Hornicek emerges as a potential candidate to provide competition alongside first-choice goalkeeper Nick Pope. Discussions are ongoing, and a swift agreement could be reached if all parties consent to the terms.
