Newcastle United have secured the signing of French midfielder Aladji Bamba from Monaco in a deal that could reach £34 million. The 20-year-old, who has signed a five-year contract, becomes the club’s fourth summer acquisition aged 20 or under, following the arrivals of goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen, winger Bazoumana Touré, and midfielder Sean Steur.

Bamba, a natural defensive midfielder, impressed during his 25 appearances for Monaco last season, competing in both Ligue 1 and the Champions League. He is expected to compete for the midfield anchor role left vacant after Sandro Tonali’s departure to Tottenham Hotspur in a £92.5 million transfer. Newcastle’s head coach, Eddie Howe, emphasized Bamba’s potential for growth and versatility in the midfield, highlighting his development since breaking through at Monaco.

“I’m very happy to be here,” Bamba said upon his arrival. “I was very excited when I heard Newcastle were interested in signing me. I know about the history of the club and I’ve visited the stadium, which is amazing. I can’t wait to be on the pitch.” Bamba also expressed eagerness to adapt to the Premier League and make an impact, calling it “the biggest league in the world.”

Newcastle’s recruitment policy has focused on signing players aged 24 or under who fit within a transfer range of approximately £20 million to £40 million, with an emphasis on potential resale value. This approach aligns with the club’s recent agreement with UEFA regarding financial regulations, aiming to maintain compliance while strengthening the squad.

Howe also noted the potential benefit of retaining Brazil midfielder Bruno Guimarães, who is linked with a move to Arsenal. Guimarães’s presence could assist Bamba in adjusting to life in England and the demands of Premier League football.

Bamba, a France Under-20 international, is set to wear the number 8 jersey previously donned by Tonali and, historically, by Newcastle legend Paul Gascoigne before he also moved to Tottenham. The club and player alike are hopeful that Bamba’s arrival will bolster Newcastle’s midfield options as they build toward a competitive season.
